He has spent a number of years working in Bank of America and UBS as well as working as a management consultant in Price Waterhouse and ING interspersed with freelance work. He has significant experience as a project manager and has specialised in major projects in which he had to manage multi-cultural global teams with critical deliverables on a number of projects (e.g. Y2K) where team members and managers were located in diverse time zones. For example, he project managed a range of joint external consulting and internal staff teams in the restructuring and commercialisation of a US$250 million Polish state-owned commercial bank, whose profits grew by 100%. On behalf of the Board, he engaged international consultants and consulting firms to lead and work alongside in-house project teams. The many elements of the US$ million restructuring plan often overlapped or were undertaken simultaneously. During this period he also held financial and operational accountability for approval and implementation of those projects as well as the selection/dismissal of, management of and ultimate successful delivery by those providers for:
He then built upon that foundation and supported the Board and the Polish government in subsequently achieving a successful US$100 million privatisation of the bank on both the New York and Warsaw stock exchanges, on schedule, in 1996. He also project managed the implementation of the first business unit budgeting system and funds transfer pricing system for Bank Gdanski (US$700million balance sheet, 60 branches, 5,000 staff, annual net profit of US$40 million), utilising a dedicated ten-person local team. This team designed, trained and implemented these new processes within the required 12 month timeframe, and within budget. Whilst working for UBS, he integrated the US$ multi-billion Hong Kong investment banking Operations Division and associated global trading books of Swiss Banking Corporation and UBS in 1998, ensuring that with no losses occurred as a result of the integration process. He also achieved US$30 million savings for UBS when he managed a team which saved in excess of US$10m annually in IT application development and management costs and successfully negotiated changes to a long-term outsourcing contract for the bank’s IT infrastructure platform which resulted in future annual savings of approximately US$20 million per annum. He was also Global Y2K project manager for the US$ multi-billion Operations and Operations IT Divisions of UBS Warburg. He successfully project managed contingency planning and millennium weekend command and control processes. As part of the establishment of the Price Waterhouse consulting practice in that country in the early 1990s he penetrated the Czechoslovak financial services industry, winning contracts with a number of clients in a hostile market. He was also responsible for the project management of the reconstruction of a £1.0 billion asset register for Barclays Bank Property Services Division in the late 1980s.
